MTE GlobalTox understands how to effectively integrate regulatory requirements and scientific information to promote informed decision making. Canadian, American and international corporations, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations have relied on our dedicated team of experts to help them identify, assess, apply and communicate the information that is critical to managing their toxicology-related issues.

Risk Assessment & Toxicology Services

  • Human Health Risk Assessment
MTE GlobalTox uses up-to-date information and methods to evaluate potential risks to humans associated with exposures to chemicals in their environments. We are familiar with human health risk assessment (HHRA) methods commonly used across North America, including Ontario's new Regulation 153/04 process. Our HHRAs range from basic to complex, including the use of probabilistic methods and consideration of multiple exposure media, as appropriate. Three GlobalTox staff members meet the requirements for Qualified Person, Risk Assessment (QPRA) in Ontario.

  • Ecological Risk Assessment
MTE GlobalTox's ecological risk assessment (ERA) services can help clients evaluate risks to non-human species associated with environmental exposures to chemicals. Our ERA work includes both terrestrial and aquatic animal and plant species, and focuses on the appropriate level of organization to respond to the specific issue at hand (individual, population, community, physical environment, ecosystem). We are familiar with many different approaches to ecological risk assessment, including those of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, Ontario and the European Union. Three MTE GlobalTox staff members meet the requirements for Qualified Person, Risk Assessment (QPRA) in Ontario.

  • Environmental Quality Standard Development
MTE GlobalTox has unparalleled experience in the development of Environmental Quality Criteria (EQC). Our staff participated in the development of both the Guideline for Use at Contaminated Sites in Ontario and the scientific aspects of the regulation which replaced it, Ontario Regulation 153/04. GlobalTox has assisted the federal government of Canada in updating Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines, and in the evaluation of several substances for "toxicity" as defined in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. We have helped municipalities and private sector clients in developing EQCs for unregulated substances, with a goal of ensuring protection of human health and the environment. MTE GlobalTox can assist clients manage occupational exposures to new substances, by establishing hazard and exposure classification systems and occupational exposure limits to protect workers.

  • Toxicology Profiling
MTE GlobalTox prepares comprehensive toxicological profiles of substances of interest to our clients. The toxicological profiles can be developed and used as support for a variety of different applications, including:
    • Regulatory submissions,
    • Expert opinions in legal matters,
    • Development of environmental quality criteria,
    • Adoption or modification of environmental quality criteria from other jurisdictions, and
    • Risk communication tools

MTE GlobalTox professionals have the education, experience and credentials to be credible experts in legal matters. Two of our senior toxicologists are certified by the American Board of Toxicologists and are members of both the UK and European Registers of Toxicologists. We can assist clients in the development of opinion evidence (preparation of affidavits, will-say documents, etc.), in the review of reports and expert opinions of others, and in provision of oral or written evidence. Our legal support work has included projects related to indoor mold, impaired driving (alcohol and other substances of abuse), drug interactions, health effects of chemicals, ionizing radiation, and electromagnetic radiation, human health risk assessment, environmental risk assessment and development of environmental quality criteria to protect human health and the environment.

Risk Communication

Science is useful as a decision making tool only when it is effectively communicated by scientists and understood by stakeholders. In high concern situations where trust may be low, effective communication can improve the credibility of decision making processes and the information they are based on. At MTE GlobalTox, we deliver risk communication training programs for our clients and provide technical communication services on environmental projects.

  • Training: MTE GlobalTox, in collaboration with Trevor Smith Diggins develops and delivers customized ½-, 1- and 2-day training programs focused on communicating science effectively in high concern - low trust situations. We have delivered this course to many government, private sector and non-government organizations since 2001. Each course is founded on solid principals that teach participants how to be effective communicators, and courses are tailored to our clients' individual needs.

  • Support: MTE GlobalTox provides hands-on risk communication support to help our clients communicate science effectively to their stakeholders on environmental issues. We have a reputation for being honest, credible and effective in our communications with our clients' stakeholders. By communicating scientific information effectively, we help our clients foster positive, two-way dialogue with parties interested in their projects. This promotes solutions-oriented attitudes to dealing with resolving health concerns, and helps to ensure that key decisions are based on sound information, rather than on fear and speculation.

Peer Reviews

MTE GlobalTox reviews technical documents produced by other scientists, including risk assessments, toxicological profiles and regulatory guidance documents. Our reviews on behalf of our industry and government clients focus on evaluating documents with respect to:

  • Appropriateness of scientific methods or approach used,
  • Ensuring that cited information is complete and up-to-date,
  • Consistency with cited regulatory guidance,
  • Fulfillment of stated objectives,
  • Appropriateness of conclusions and recommendations, and
  • Appropriateness of writing style for the target audience.

At MTE GlobalTox, we believe that our role as peer reviewers is to bring an independent eye to a document, and to look for opportunities to suggest changes which make the document more scientifically defensible, more transparent, or more complete. We have a reputation for being constructive peer reviewers whose involvement contributes positively to the projects we are involved in.
