Career Paths

Within the area of applied science and engineering several levels of expertise are needed to develop a functioning team. Where people end up depends on their job preferences, education and experience.

There are four levels of expertise that range from more hands-on to more theoretical including apprenticeship, diploma, degree, and graduate degrees.

  • Apprenticeships: are entered after high school and allow individuals to develop the skills that required for process development and maintenance.
  • Diplomas: technicians and technologists work in a variety of environments and perform a variety of duties. They may work indoor preparing specifications, administrating projects or doing design work. Outdoors they may perform tests or evaluations, supervise site work or run equipment.
  • Degrees: degree holders are often in administrative roles, having responsibility for project design and supervision. Applied degree holders are a new category of degree holder who is able to work at a theoretical and supervisory level and has practical experience with equipment, how it runs and what it is capable of doing.
  • Graduate degrees: are those who work at a highly theoretical level and focus on pure science.
