Showcase Success
A municipality should report and showcase the progress and success of their brownfield projects during and after redevelopment. The developer and municipality should continue to meeting with and share progress reports to the community throughout the process. Education, participation and sharing of information are the keys to successful communication and collaboration with your community.
Community Participation
Community participation facilitates the development, growth and success of several areas through the redevelopment and approval process. There are several stages during the redevelopment project at which community participation should occur. These include:
- During planning and zoning requirements:
- Leads to less contentious approval and any amendments to Official Plan, CIP, zoning and by-law changes;
- Avoids Ontario Municipal Board hearing;
- Lowers budget expenses for developer and municipality; and
- Results in significant saving of time (10 months versus 18/24 months).
- Remediation phase:
- Enables open discussion of environmental issues and “best solutions”;
- Minimizes stress related to health and environmental issues; and
- Reduces time and costs for remediation and redevelopment.
Community participation leads to overall community growth. It provides:
- Opens channels of communication with community;
- Educates the community and stakeholders;
- Improves level of trust among the community, municipality and developer;
- Allows for incorporation of new ideas to improve the project and community;
- Creates pride of ownership and pride of community;
- Generates support for community-based businesses around the project area;
- Supports participation by community-based organizations;
- Increases reasonable expectations in the community; and
- Generates greater confidence in brownfield redevelopment projects.
Tools to Showcase Success
Throughout the project the municipality and developer should work together to showcase their success to promote and encourage future brownfield redevelopment projects and economic growth.
The municipality and Working Group can utilize tools developed through this process to showcase success:
- The Business Case developed;
- Benefits identified;
- The marketing tools created previously;
- Media identified;
- Information from community Input; and
- Information and images from monitoring the site.
The progress of the site should be demonstrated in stages along with benefits to the municipality community.
Media and tools can include:
- Community meetings
- Case studies

- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Tours (personalized or group)
- Open houses
- Events (conferences, workshops and seminars)
