Abandoned mines in northern Canada are complex
contaminated sites inherited by the federal government
from past private-sector mining operations... Hundreds
of thousands of tons of highly toxic chemicals such as
arsenic and cyanide are found at northern abandoned mine
sites. These chemicals, the result of past mining
operations, have accumulated to hazardous levels.
