Hamilton:
Brownfield Redevelopment Opportunities
The City of Hamilton has been working to promote
the redevelopment of brownfields in its older industrial areas
for several years. In 1997, the City established an Industrial
Redevelopment Task Force. This Task Force was formed to develop
strategies to bring brownfield properties back into productive
use. The Task Force is comprised of twenty (20) senior private
and public sector stakeholders from the legal, finance, real
estate, environmental management, engineering and urban planning
professions. In 1997, the City of Hamilton was also one of the
first cities in Ontario to establish policies to deal with site
contamination through the planning process.
With the help of the Industrial Redevelopment Task Force, the
City has prepared a Community Improvement Plan, known as the
Environmental Remediation and Site Enhancement Plan or ERASE
Plan (PDF). This Plan provides financial and other incentives
to promote the redevelopment and re-use of brownfield properties
in the City's 3,400 acre older industrial area. This was approved
in August 2001.
The City
of Hamilton's Economic Development Department manages the ERASE
program. This single point of contact provide ERASE application
forms, guidance, brownfield information services, access to
regulatory and planning contacts and serves as an advocate and
liaison between City departments, other government agencies
and participating brownfield partners.
