R&D Achievements
Ontario Centres of Excellence have an impressive legacy of success. Below are some recent highlights from the Centre for Earth and Environmental Technologies. And, there are more successes on the horizon
Innovation to Industry
- EnviroMetal Technologies Inc. (ETI) – ETI was founded to commercialize a radically different approach to groundwater remediation. The use of granular iron in a below ground, permeable barrier (PRB) configuration for removal of chlorinated organic contaminants from groundwater was first proposed by Dr. Gillham of the University of Waterloo (UW) in 1989.
- Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin Inc. (RWDI) – Through a collaborative project with OCE, York University and RWDI, a unique modelling technology was commercialized that can be used to replicate and predict concentrations of a wide range of pollutants, including common air contaminants, toxics, and smog forming pollutants over large geographic regions.
R&D Success Stories
- Earthworms Helping Identify Toxic Soils - New
Technology Will Refine Environmental Clean-ups at Decommissioned Gas
Stations. A CRESTech-funded project has produced a
simple and cost-effective method to assess soil toxicity using
earthworms, plants, and soil arthropods. The new technology will be
used to better assess the environmental clean-ups performed at
decommissioned gas stations. (PDF)
- Low-Tech Forests Put Lids on Landfills –
Municipalities To Gain From New Green Technology.
A new environmental management strategy is being developed for
Ontario municipalities that may allow them to protect and contain
toxic landfills through the use of beautiful, hard-working poplar
trees. (PDF)
OCE Annual Conference
- Ontario Centres of Excellence's Discovery 2006 conference took
the opportunity to celebrate innovation success through the Mind To
Market Award. Sponsored by Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Financial
Group, the award recognizes outstanding research collaboration
between industry and an academic research team that has resulted in
successful commercialization. It is through such collaborations that
OCE supports the development of leading edge ideas that drive
industrially relevant solutions. (learn
