Location: Guelph, Ontario
Project Scale: Completed.
Media Treated: Liquid.
Clean up of Site Involved: Treatment, Monitoring.
Site Condition: Groundwater under vacant land impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons due to historical releases from underground storage tanks, including:
  • Benzene
  • Toluene
  • Ethylbenzene
  • Total xylenes
  • Total petroleum hydrocarbons (gas, diesel and heavy oil)
  • 1,2 dichloroethane
Proposed Site Usage: Continued commercial site usage.
Reasons for Success: Numerical simulations to optimize the placement of the Emitters as well as to provide the client with various scenarios in which financial and capital budgeting decisions could be made.

Minimization of the timeframe required for remediation by choosing a suitable aproach.

Saving approx. $1,1 million in capital and maintenance cost over a five-year period compared against a pump-and-treat remedial approach.
Clean Up Criteria Goals:
MOE non-potable groundwater standards met.
Regulatory Approvals Required: Ministry of Environment Certificate of Approval
Exceedance of Set Standards: n/a
Technologies Used:
Treatment/Removal/Extraction Technology
1. Waterloo Emitters
Implementation of a passive enhanced in situ bioremediation program incorporating 25 Waterloo Emitters installed in the existing monitoring well network.
Description:
Augmentation of biodegradation reactions by increasing the oxygen concentration in the groundwater by over 800%. The Waterloo Emitters release oxygen to the groundwater through diffusion.
